Blackberry is planning to make a much needed comeback in the smartphone market. The company could be a step closer to success by gaining entry into the touch screen segment with the launch of Leap. Blackberry had unveiled the device at MWC 2015 and now it is finally arriving in India on May 7.
Usually smartphone brands try to come out with flagship devices in order to regain entry in the market or try their luck at becoming a major player. However, Blackberry decided to push it into the mid-priced segment with international pricing being $275 and the Price for the Indian market being under INR 20,000. This device will also be replacing the Blackberry Z3 in the market, so it is expected that the brand could come up as a competitor in the touch smartphone segment.
The keys specs for the Blackberry Leap are as follows;
- Processor: 1.5 GHz Qualcomm MSM 8960 processor
- Display: 5-inch HD screen
- Memory: 2GB RAM
- Storage: 16GB of internal memory (expandable up to 128 GB via microSD card)
- OS: BB OS 10.3.5
- Camera: 8MP rear shooter, 5 MP front camera
- Battery: 2800 mAh non-removable Lithium Ion battery
Probably the biggest challenge that faces Blackberry is the presence of Chinese smartphone brands like Xiaomi which have a firm foothold in the budget smartphone and mid-price segment. It would be a titanic task to actually woo customers to go for the Blackberry Leap instead of other alternatives. It seems that the battery life on the Leap could prove to be a major advantage for the brand as the battery is being claimed to deliver over a day’s worth of active performance on a single complete charge. Let’s see what Blackberry’s “Leap” of faith turns out to be in India. We will have to wait till May 7 for seeing the results and understanding the implications in a clear manner.
