There was a time when only official communication was done through emails or a very few personal information like photos and text were shared on personal e-mails. The first and foremost measure that could be taken is setting a strong password. A strong password is as important as intermittently changing the password. What is a strong password? There are various factors which sum up to get a strong password like- length, characters and special characters. Always get a substantially long password with a mix of alphabets and numbers i.e. alphanumeric. Adding special characters makes the password even stronger. This makes it difficult to hack your e-mail.
2-Step Verification
Lately Google has introduced a 2-step verification process. A 2-step verification process involves the mobile phone. A time sensitive verification code is sent to your mobile phone, which enables you to access your mail. Even if someone gets access to your password, your e-mail cannot be broken into.
HTTPS
HTTP is the protocol, over which data is sent between your browser and the website. And HTTPS is the secured version of HTTP which lately has gained a widespread usage. It makes all the communication between your browser and the website encrypted making it more secure. Always enable this service from your browser’s settings page.
Phishing
It is a fraudulent practice of sending emails in disguise of a reputational entity in order to mislead people into believing the communication is from a trusted source, eventually making them disclose their personal information like passwords and credit card numbers. Do not reply to any such emails asking for your credentials.
Verified Icons
Verified icons are the newest feature added by Google. As of now a couple of websites have got authentication icons and it will grow in future with more and more websites getting it. The verification icon is the sign of trust that you have received a mail from the original website.
Recovery Information
In case you forget or lose your password, you could recover all your data back. You just need to answer the questions right to the questions you had set for recovery option.
Attachments
Do not open attachments from unknown e-mail IDs, they might contain viruses or other malwares which can severely damage your computer. Google does have a built-in virus scan which prompts you about any such attachment, yet ignoring such attachments is recommended.
Logout
Signing out should be a practice. Many of us are not in a habit of logging out of our Gmail accounts which could make our accounts more vulnerable. Remember to always sign out from the session.
These were a few important tips to secure and safeguard your Gmail Account from possible hackers which would surely be a great help to you.
