Microsoft Releases Major Updates of Office Suite for the iPad

Microsoft Releases Major Updates

Now here is some good news for those who have been wishing for some upgrades in the Microsoft Office Mobile Suite. The company has finally come out with a major update (known as Version 1.1) wherein Word, Excel, and PowerPoint have been given several features that were being requested by users from across the globe. This is the second major update to have hit the market since the mobile suite launched on March 27, 2014. However, only iPad users would be able to get this update now.

The ability to “export to pdf” which was in much demand has finally been added to all the three tools and this is in addition to other unique features that have been provided for each. There is also a “crop tool” which allows you to crop and resize images manually in all three apps. With this tool, you may choose from a list of pre-set sizes (really handy for saving time) or you could come up with your own custom size. And if you make a mistake while doing it, you simply have to click the reset button and all of the changes will be undone instantly. Last but not the least, the iPad Office suite is now capable of importing external fonts, so everyone will be able to enjoy customization like never before.

The specific updated features for the respective apps are as follows;

• Word For iPad (1.1 Update)

o   Word files can now be sent as pdf files.

o   Third party fonts can be accessed from the font menu.

o   With the new crop tool, you can use pre-set cropping sizes to focus on specific portions or you could do it as per your requirement. In both cases, you can always undo the changes by clicking on the reset button

• Excel For iPad (1.1 Update)

o   Excel files can now be sent as pdf files.

o   Now you can select all the data in any row or column by simply flicking a cell’s selction handle in any direction.

o   External keyboard support has been enabled wherein you can use all key combinations and navigate through the sheet just like you would do in a PC or a Mac machine.

o   It is possible to interact with PivotTables that have the source data in the same workbook.

o   Printing options have been increased with more paper sizes and scaling options which give you greater control over the layout of the document.

o   Third party fonts can be accessed from the font menu.

o   With the new crop tool, you can use pre-set cropping sizes to focus on specific portions or you could do it as per your requirement. In both cases, you can always undo the changes by clicking on the reset button.

• Powerpoint For iPad (1.1 Update)

o   Excel files can now be sent as pdf files.

o   Third party fonts can be accessed from the font menu.

o   Videos can be inserted directly from the camera roll.

o   With the new crop tool, you can use pre-set cropping sizes to focus on specific portions or you could do it as per your requirement. In both cases, you can always undo the changes by clicking on the reset button.

o   It is possible to add hyperlinks or even modify those that are already existing in the document.

o   You can now easily erase the highlights and drawings that are in your presentation.

o   Videos, sound effects, and background music can be played back while presenting.

The first major update for the Office Suite was released in April and it contained improvements such as the ability to print directly from the apps. One of the reasons behind such focus on the Microsoft Office Suite for iPad is that since its launch, it has been downloaded almost 35 million times.

The company’s determination to continually improve its apps has made it competent enough to challenge the likes of Apple’s iWork suite which includes the use of keynotes, numbers and pages.

Microsoft also shared on its blog that, “As this wave of updates hopefully shows, we’re making good on our commitment to delivering continuous updates and improvements to the Office for iPad apps.”

iPad users can download all updates from the App store free of charge. However, you will have restricted access to the features for the free version. In order to unlock the entire set of features, you would need to take up an Office 365 subscription. But that would not prove to be too expensive, considering the immense benefits that are acquired from the Office Suite.
