Is Microsoft’s Surface Pro 3 Capable of Replacing the Laptop?

Microsoft’s Surface Pro 3

Laptops and tablets are the two most common gadgets that can be seen in the possession of businessmen as well as any other corporate personnel. These are usually used for different purposes and have size as well as processing power as the major differentiating factors. However, major brands are trying to come up with a solution that diminishes the fine line between a tablet and a laptop.

On Tuesday, (20th May, 2014), Microsoft launched the latest version of its Surface series of tablets. The new product has been named as Surface Pro 3 which not only has a larger screen than the previous models, but it also brings together the best aspects of a tablet and a laptop. The screen (12 inches) is bigger than the screens of small sized laptops. It is this feature which has been garnering good attention from critics as well as customers in the gadget world. This has been Microsoft’s attempt at making a statement about its capabilities of distinguishing itself in the tablet market.

Microsoft New Entertainment Oriented Device

Microsoft shared its perspective that most tablets in the market are basically entertainment oriented devices that fall back on performance when work needs to be done. You can watch movies, listen to songs and check out your photos while being on the move. This is where the Surface Pro 3 comes into play. Not only does it provide great entertainment value, but it also offers great performance with the possibility of working with more than one application simultaneously. This feature is pretty common for laptops, but for tablets, this would open up a whole new world of multi-tasking. Satya Nadella, CEO – Microsoft, was enthusiastic about the new product and he stated, “We want products and technology that enable people to dream and get stuff done.”

The device is expected to come in a new “type” cover where one surface of the cover (probably the inside of the cover) would double as the keyboard. Other accessories include a Surface Pen (included with purchase), a Docking Station and a Surface Ethernet Adapter. This really makes the design super-efficient and reduces the need to carry around cumbersome accessories.

The all new Surface Pro 3 will be priced at $799 which is roughly $100 less than the costs of its predecessors. It will be made available in the US and Canada on 20th June at 12 am EDT. But pre-orders can be made from today. It is expected that by the end of August, the company would have served Australia, Austria, Belgium, China, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Korea, Luxembourg, Malaysia, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand and the United Kingdom.

Only time will tell whether the Surface Pro 3 is able to boost the sales for Microsoft’s under performing Surface tablet series. The company needs to make a major comeback if it has to gain leverage in the market and set itself out as a major brand in the tablet segment.
