While You Were Away” on Twitter

Did you miss out on important updates / tweets while you were away from Twitter? The micro-blogging platform has officially announced the addition of a new feature called “While You Were Away” which is meant to give a list of important and relevant updates / tweets that a user might have missed during the offline period.

The information would be provided when the user logs in again into his / her account. Don’t expect a notification to pop up like the one you find in Facebook. Twitter has come up with an interesting way of providing the updates which the user would receive in the form of a snapshot.

But just how does Twitter decide which tweets and updates are relevant to you? It’s simple. The platform makes use of a specific algorithm which analyses the activities of the user, the engagement levels and other activities. This helps the system to come up with a list of preferences based on your social activity and this is used for determining the “relevant tweets” for the snapshot.

Twitter announced, “A lot can happen while you’re on the go. To fill in some of those gaps, we will surface a few of the best Tweets you probably wouldn’t have seen otherwise, determined by engagement and other factors. If you check in on Twitter now and then for a quick snapshot of what’s happening, you’ll see this recap more often; if you spend a lot of time on Twitter already, you’ll see it less.”

The reason behind the addition of this new feature is that Twitter doesn’t want its users to be out of touch with the social updates, even if they are offline. It is possible that a user might miss an important update while offline. The snapshot feature would allow users to get important tweets without having to monitor their account 24×7. As of now, this feature is only available to iOS users. But the company has assured that it would be updated for other platforms as well. Till then, iOS users can enjoy the benefit of knowing what happened while they were away.
